What is a Wood Engraving?

A wood engraving is a style of block print, much like a wood cut, linocut, or rubber block print. Where they differ from the former is the style of wood and tool used to create the fine detail you see in each print. Wood engravings are cut into dense, end grain hardwood, cut across the tree, to get very clean grain that can support such tiny details carved with high carbon steel engraving tools, often used for copper engraving or jewelry.
